Tension is rising in Obinomba community, Ukwuani Local Government Area of Delta State, as youths and members of the local vigilante group have accused operatives of the Nigeria Police of brutality, extortion, and unlawful detention.
The aggrieved youths claim that security personnel, particularly a unit identified as the SACUS team, have subjected them to harassment and intimidation, undermining efforts to tackle insecurity in the area.
According to several testimonies, residents who are arrested are allegedly forced to pay outrageous sums of money before they can regain their freedom. Amounts range from β¦250,000 to as much as β¦5 million in some cases.
βOur voices can no longer be silenced. We are being intimidated, brutalized, and exploited by those who are supposed to protect us,β one of the youths lamented. βBecause of this, even the vigilante can no longer fight insecurity in Obinomba.β
The community is now calling on the Chairman of Ukwuani Local Government Area to urgently intervene and investigate the matter, warning that continued police excesses could worsen insecurity in the town.
At the time of filing this report, the Police Command in Delta State had yet to issue an official response to the allegations.
